Glaucoma Management with Our Optometrists in Long Grove

Did you know it's estimated that over 3 million Americans have glaucoma? Yet, only half of them know they have it and even less have been screened for it. As the number one cause of blindness, we encourage you to see an optometrist to protect your visual health.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that create increased pressure within the eye. This elevated pressure is caused by a backup of fluid in the eye. Over time, the pressure damages the optic nerve and ability to see. Through early detection, diagnosis and treatment, we can help to preserve your vision.

Glaucoma Treatment in Long Grove

At Forsight Vision we manage glaucoma with various treatment methods:

Eye drops for glaucoma are administered at home on a daily basis. If you've used drops in the past and experienced any stinging, burning, itching, dry mouth, changes in breathing, or blurred vision, please let us know prior to administering the medication so we may find a more suitable option for you.

Pills are sometimes administered to support the drops. Pills are used to reduce the amount of fluid leaving the eye and are often taken several times per day. To prevent any prescription or supplement side effects and reactions, it is essential to let our optometrists know about any other medications or supplements you may be using.

Laser surgery for glaucoma management

When pills or drops have not provided sufficient glaucoma management, our optometrists may suggest the use of laser surgery to reduce the amount of fluid leaving the eye. In this case, we will refer you to our trusted colleagues to perform a quick and painless surgical procedure. The surgery options are:

Trabeculoplasty is the procedure for open-angle glaucoma. When this method is used, the angle is optimized to help efficiently drain fluid from the eye. In doing so, the pressure is reduced in the eye.

Iridotomy is the procedure used when a patient experiences the closed-angle type of glaucoma. The ophthalmologist will create a tiny hole in the iris of the eye. This small hole will advance fluid drainage and direct it at an optimized angle.
